On the last Sunday in May, buyers and sellers from all over Kuressaare will be getting together at points around the city to give things that have been gathering dust at home a new lease on life.
OPEN YARDS IN KIHELKONNA

For the fifth time, the people of Kihelkonna are opening their backyards and courtyards to visitors. This year's open yards are located nice and close to one another in the Kihelkonna district. In total, five places will be opening their gates, offering everything from the usual home cafés to handicrafts, face painting and mini-zoos. The open yards serve as a welcome prelude to the Midsummer celebrations.

THE OPEN GARDENS OF SAARE COUNTY

The Open Gardens of Saare County showcases the island’s most beautiful gems. Homeowners will be throwing open the gates to both well-known flower gardens and hidden idylls which are usually only for the enjoyment of the families who tend them. This is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year for green thumbs, giving you the chance to peek into other people's gardens, exchange thoughts on plant varieties and share gardening tips.
ORISSAARE FESTIVAL
11 - 14 July
The people of Orissaare have also decided to transform their backyards into cafés, and not for the first time. In addition to homemade pastries and delicious snacks, they’ll be offering musical interludes, second-hand stalls and much more.
OPEN FARM DAY
20 & 21 July
The 9th Estonian Open Farm Day will give you the chance to potter around farms of all sizes getting to know the plants and animals, admiring the amazing farm equipment, enjoying authentic farm food, taking part in tours and workshops and much more. Each farm will have its own programme showcasing the things that make it unique.
MUHU CAFÉ DAY
26-28 July
Both year-round and summer residents of Muhu will be turning their yards or village greens into home cafés for one weekend. Museums, ports, studios and other centres and establishments will be joining them, too. In addition to cakes and pastries, you're sure to find the traditional Muhu drink apurokka in some of the cafés.
VALJALA CAFÉ DAY
20 July
Families in Valjala will be opening their yards up to visitors for one Saturday so that they can enjoy the best food and drinks the region has to offer. In previous years, local residents and those summering in the area have participated in the café day, along with museums, ports and village halls. You can find out who will be opening a yard café this summer and where they’ll be located by checking the FB page.
NASVA FISH CAFÉ DAY
27 July | 12:00-18:00
For one day at the end of July, many people in the old fishing village of Nasva will be opening their yards to visitors for them to enjoy delicious home-made snacks and dishes. Fish is sure to be among them, in soups and pastries, and both fried and dried. As you might expect of a fishing village, you’ll also be able to take a water taxi along the river from one café to the next.
KARJA PARISH HOME CAFÉ DAYS
27 & 28 July
Home cafés in Karja parish will also be opening their doors for two days. Make the most of this opportunity to enjoy good food and drinks and pleasant company.
LAIMJALA CAFÉ DAY
10 August
The people of Laimjala have also taken the initiative to hold a home café day in their area. They’re working hard to prepare for it, choosing the best recipes and testing the dishes. A day of delicious food will culminate in a huge party on Audla’s village green.
SAAREMAA FOOD FESTIVAL: VISIT VILLAGES | 14 September | 12:00-18:00
As part of the Saaremaa Food Festival, villages throughout the county will be inviting you to visit their halls, community centres, village greens and other places of importance to them. These villages are opening their doors so as to showcase the stories and places and the past and present of the communities in Saare County. All of these places are special and worth visiting!

September is when ripe apples colour the trees red and the question of what to do with them comes up once again. The Saaremaa Food Festival offers you the chance to get together and make your Sunday truly exciting. On the Sunday in question, Kuressaare will bustle with visitors when apple cafés open in people’s yards and in public spaces.
