A TRIP TO A GREEN ISLAND

The people of Saaremaa have stood out for their green way of thinking – in 2020, Saare County was chosen among the TOP 100 sustainable destinations in the world.

TRAVEL BY BUS OR ELECTRIC CAR

Buses leave the capital for the islands every couple of hours. County buses are free for everyone and 80% of the buses drive on natural gas (i.e. CNG fuel). There are several electric car charging points all over Saaremaa, some of them also at spa hotels.

BOOKINGS

It is not necessary to print tickets and other bookings, you can safely save them on your smartphone.

RIDE A BIKE

You can also explore the island by bicycle – the ground is fl at and mountains are not an obstacle. Car trac is relatively sparse and there are plenty of light trac roads. Spa hotels in Kuressaare also rent electric scooters.

DINE AT LOCAL CAFES & RESTAURANTS

Raw materials from Saaremaa are highly valued. Fish caught in the morning are often already on the menu of a local restaurant by lunch. Almost 10% of the best restaurants in Estonia are located in Saaremaa and Muhu.

TAKE YOUR DRINK BOTTLE WITH YOU

The islands have clean water. You can fi ll your drink bottle with spring or tap water and many restaurants provide free drinking water. There are also some public wells in Kuressaare.

PREFER LOCAL FOOD & SOUVENIRS

When choosing food or souvenirs look for the label “EHTNE”. This blue mark is an indication that the product is largely made on the local islands and from local raw materials.

All the islanders are grateful if you clean up your picnic area, make a campfire only in designated places and avoid using plastic.

Welcome to the green islands! ->
