One of the biggest ventures in Laimjala is the Asva Viking Village family theme park, inspired by a Bronze Age and Viking Era settlement here.

One area where life is not just bubbling but full-on boiling is Laimjala on the eastern coast of Saaremaa.

At the Viking Village, you can go for a climb in the adventure park, make friends with the local animals and birds, engage in activities in the Viking castle, or enjoy concerts on the castle stage on summer evenings.

You can have a bite to eat at the café there or go for a swim from the quay or just enjoy the nice surroundings. In recent years, studying the local food culture and trying out old recipes has become particularly popular in Laimjala.

Led by Nooda farm, this activity has come to fruit in a bilingual – Estonian and English – book ‘Traditional Tastes of Laimjala’ which you can purchase at the farm.

The heart of the community is in the shop and the summer café run by a local family. You can enjoy freshly baked bread and pastries on the shop terrace or across the road in a beautiful open-air recreational centre dedicated to Debora Vaarandi, the author of the lyrics of the hymn of our island – ‘Saaremaa Waltz’.

So, the wise thing to do is to take some time when passing through Laimjala, as it truly is bustling with life!
