Muhu

an island where time stands still

When you come to our islands the traditional way, the multi-layered Muhu is the first to welcome you on your island vacation. Muhu is not a place to just drive through. All the charm of Muhu, as vibrant as an Easter egg, calls for a pause and some time to fully enjoy.

How to get to the island?

In the summer, the sailboat Moonland sails between Muhu and the mainland. If you plan to visit the island with your own vessel, Kuivastu Harbour, Koguva Harbour and Lõunaranna Harbour are ready to welcome you.

Muhu: a spa for the senses

There is plenty to explore on the island and get to know its lifestyle. The distances are short, so getting around by bicycle, boat or even horseback is easy. Muhu is diverse and, in many ways, even exotic – especially for northern regions. Yet, the island’s village atmosphere and landscapes provide moments of escape, offering peaceful retreats where you can simply be. Among the junipers, distinctive doors and stone walls, you can sense the everyday life of the people of Muhu. Let Muhu be your home port as you set sail to nearby small islands – Viirelaid, full of contrasts; the pristinely fascinating Kesselaid; or Kõinastu, the film star of its time.

What flavours define the island?

In the heart of Liiva village, there is a small bakery. The irresistible aroma of warm bread baked by Muhu Pagarid can be smelled even on the mainland, and who knows, maybe it is what drew you to the island. Leaving the island without a loaf of their bread is, to put it mildly, a sin. Waiting in the winding queue for freshly baked loaves is an experience in itself – a thrilling anticipation, wondering if you will get your own loaf or miss out entirely. Liiva Food Street greets you with a medley of flavours – a true taste of summery Muhu, which is a must-try for everyone. Also waiting for you on Muhu is the only MICHELIN Guide-listed restaurant on the Estonian islands, Restaurant Alexander at Pädaste Manor. If you spot a dish called apurokk on the menu on Muhu, you might wonder what it is – salty or sweet, sour or bland? Try it and find out.

Authentic Muhu

Muhu is an island in Estonia where people are the happiest. Here, the national costumes are eye-catchingly vibrant and girls’ rose-covered slippers display intricate patterns competing with each other. Muhu showcases the culture of the coastal people, from ancient times to the present day. The island places a strong emphasis on ecological balance and a nature-centred way of thinking. For a thousand years, the uisk-type sailing ship has been a symbol of Muhu County. Local intricate handicrafts and maritime traditions, combined with a unique culture and nature, inspire us to sing, ‘Oo meite Muhu’, a sentiment from a local folk song.
