Cycling trips

Cycling through Saaremaa and Muhu is a pleasure, as the islands are ideally sized for cycling trips. If you did not bring your own bike, you can rent one on the island.

The road network of Saaremaa and Muhu is perfect for cycling, with many peaceful roads where traffic is light and nature is always nearby. The narrow paths winding through fields, forests and small villages are especially enjoyable. The distances on our islands are reasonable and the terrain is flat, which make it an every cyclist’s dream.

There are 20 kilometres of cycle paths around Kuressaare. Along the cycle path, you can ride from Kuressaare to the island’s best sandy beaches in Mändjala (12 km). However, there is no need to be afraid of carriageways either as the traffic is relatively light, making them easy for cyclists to navigate. If you do not want to bring your own bicycle, you can rent one locally. Saaremaa and Muhu are also part of the international EuroVelo and EstoVelo cycle routes, with signs marking these routes along the way.

The call of the island’s roads

To experience the islands as authentically as possible, venture off the main road – the idyllic side roads offer much more visual charm and opportunities for discovery. Starting from Kuressaare, you can embark on tours that take you through the island’s historical and natural landmarks. Popular stops on a bicycle tour include the Kaali crater and the Angla windmills. The approximately 40-kilometre cycle path on the Kuressaare-Kaali-Kuressaare route is ideal for cycling. If you plan to visit more distant areas, make sure you have enough stamina to pedal back to your starting point, as there are no public buses on the island that transport bicycles. Additionally, keep in mind that not all roads on Saaremaa and Muhu are paved – many are gravel paths.

If you are looking for cycling route ideas, check out our hiking trails and cycling paths brochure. It features four cycling tours of varying lengths starting from Kuressaare. Cycling is also an excellent way to explore the smaller islands. They are not accessible by car, so you can explore the local way of life by walking or cycling around the island.

Rent a bicycle

If you did not bring your own bike, you can rent one on the island. Bicycle rentals are available in Kuressaare and at several smaller locations around the island, including ports and tourism farms. You can choose from a variety of bikes, ranging from classic road bikes to mountain bikes, perfect for both short city tours and longer nature rides.

When cycling, follow traffic rules, wearing a helmet is recommended. On the highway, stay to the side and avoid riding in the middle of the road.
