You will find both sandy and rocky beaches, some with golden sands and hammocks, while others are known for their cooler waters, depending on the direction of the wind. Saaremaa has popular swimming spots that attract plenty of visitors, but you can also find completely private beach areas.
The islanders tend to keep their favourite swimming locations a secret, much like they do with their best spots for mushroom and berry picking. Still, with the sea all around, you can always find your way to the water – Saaremaa is a perfect destination for a beach holiday.
Saaremaa beaches are perfect for a holiday
Kuressaare beach, also known as Titerand, is perfect for those who prefer a city vacation. In summer, lifeguards keep a watchful eye on swimmers, while the Beach House café keeps you refreshed with food and drinks. The beach is also suitable for small children, who can enjoy a dip in the warm water. A notice board on the beach displays the current air and water temperatures. Be sure to check the colour of the flag: green means swimming is allowed, while red indicates swimming is prohibited.
Only 10 km from Kuressaare lie Saaremaa’s most famous sandy beaches, stretching from Mändjala to Järve. To reach the beach, you can travel by car, bike along a safe bicycle path or take the county bus to the coast. Beautiful beaches can also be found in quieter places, such as Tuhkana or Jõiste in Northern Saaremaa. Tuhkana beach is known for its crystal-clear waters. In addition to coastal beaches, Lake Karujärv, with its clean water and sandy shores, is also a highly appreciated spot for swimming and recreation.

In addition to swimming and sunbathing, the beaches of Saaremaa offer great opportunities for water sports. Windy days are ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing, but you can also try standup paddleboarding (SUP) or simply enjoy a hike along the coastal areas.
If you are heading to the beach, be sure to pack a picnic basket. While Saaremaa and Muhu have many beautiful beaches, not all of them offer kiosks or cafés where you can purchase refreshments. Remember to follow the rules of each beach and act responsibly. Always clean up after yourself and leave your spot tidy, so the next visitors can enjoy a clean environment.
